Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on July 18, 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black father and a white mom. She grew up mainly with her mother's family. Russell recalled how as a child she was viewed as unwelcome by her peers due to the color of her skin. Their parents were struggling financiallyand were always in a state of flux, moving their homes 16 times to pursue their father's career. Russell spoke out about how despite the difficulties, Russell said that she was always creative from the age of a child. She hoped to be a ballet dancer and then to become an artist. Russell was 18 when she took her first acting class. She used her earnings from work to buy a car and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. As her funds ran out, she would return home to work, until she was able to earn enough to be able to audition again. The routine continued for four more years until she was given her first TV role.
